My husband and I celebrated six wonderful years of marriage this past July. After three years of doing smaller celebrations, we decided to take a little trip this time around. We didn't want to fly anywhere so I planned a long summer weekend in Savannah, GA (about 5 hours north of us). The perfect drive and getaway. Keep reading to see our recommendations for a long weekend in the Old Historic City.
I highly recommend taking a long weekend to explore the city. We drove up on a Thursday morning and arrived by early afternoon. So we had a quarter of the day on Thursday, all day Friday, all day Saturday, and the morning on Sunday. We felt like it was just the perfect amount of time.

We loved our cute little garden-level Airbnb on Jone's Street. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and it was within walking distance to everything but so secluded (without the night noise you may get staying closer to the River District). We always pick up the essentials for coffee and breakfast to save money by not eating out for all three meals.

We also LOVED brunch at The Collins Quarter and even had it both Friday and Saturday. We also ate at Treylor Park Hitch (super unique and tasty) and a local hole-in-the-wall Tahi place!
Savannah is a really unique and fun city. We loved just strolling the town (its 2.5 square miles) on foot. Over the course of 3 days, we walked around 20 miles haha. We did do a hop-on-hop-off trolly tour with Old Town Trolly. It was very informative and super fun. This was our one splurge activity and I highly recommend it. Be sure you use the orange and green ones (info here). You can walk or trolly through the 22 squares in the town and each one holds so much rich history!
We also enjoyed exploring the Plant Riverside District (the JW Marriott Lobby is a MUST-see) and Forsyth Park. You can walk through hundreds of shops and restaurants for free along the riverside and it's really stunning at sunset. There is also a free ferry you can take down the river (provided by the city). It's worth the 15-minute ride just to see the Plant District from the water.
If you're looking to see the beach Tybee Island is a short drive from the city. We went just to drive by the lighthouse and it was PACKED. So if you're visiting in the Summer - be prepared to park far and walk to the ocean. We are lucky to live and visit the beach in Florida often - so a quick drive to see the lighthouse was good for us.
P.S. If you drive up from Florida - consider swinging over to the East Coast (highway 95) and stop at Buc-ee's. We went on our way up and back and it was quite the event. Totally worth stopping at!
We enjoyed the city so much we are actually planning to return this fall. I can't wait to experience cooler weather later this year. If you visit during summer be sure to pack light clothes, and comfortable shoes, and bring water along.
Happy Summer!
